Flourishes
These unusual designs are hundreds of years old! They come from a medieval manuscript, and are found on the pages where the manuscript itself was written. When Books of Hours were made, the artisans were specialized. Scribes did the writing, pen flourish specialists added strange and often amusing "squiggles" to the writing. The more well know craftsmen were the illustrators who painted the magnificent miniature paintings to enhance the text.
Examine these funny drawings and elegant curves carefully. Some of the Flourishes are elegant curves, and others have strange faces and creatures somewhere tucked into the design. They are just as charming as they are silly. Having a tongue sticking out seems to have been a popular motif.
